Arsenal Saiga SGL-21
I finally scraped together enough money to purchase an Arsenal Saiga SGL-21. Actually, it seemed prudent considering what's been happening in London, Philly, and Milwaukee.
Took it to the range for very short session today. At 25 yards, my handloads (1.9 Lee dipper of Reloader 7 under 123 gr. FMJ) put three bullets through one ragged hole, dead center at 6 o'clock; three rounds of Wolf made the ragged hole just a little bigger and more ragged; Yugo surplus yielded about a 3 inch group an inch higher. At 50 yards the groups spread out to about 2 inches with handloads and Wolf; about 4 with Yugo. Didn't have time to move out to 100 but expect they'l all stay in the black at minimum.
Thought this worth reporting in case anyone was thinking about buying but hesitant. I had and sold a Romy WASR about a year ago and it didn't group; it patterned worse than most shotguns so this SGL-21 was a very pleasant surprise. It's no AR but impressive for an AK platform.

My (random) comments are as follows:
In London, nobody is allowed to own guns. . .that's a large part of the reason why violent riots can occur in the first place. That sort of thing won't fly in most of the USA, with a notable exception of most Northeast cities that strongly restrict gun ownership.
In terms of actual hardware, no rifle is going to protect you from a "flash mob" attack, for the simple reason that you can't go about your daily business in an urban area carrying one. Having one in the trunk of your car is not that much better than not having it at all (ie if you're that close to your car, you can probably just hop into it, and use *IT* as the weapon!).
In that circumstance, what you need is a concealed handgun. A high cap one is probably best (more attackers needs more bullets), but realistically the "mobbers" will probably flee at the sound of one gunshot, so any handgun could potentially work.
If you need to defend your home or business, certainly a Kalashnikov could work. There are also probably 25 other guns you could pick that would work fine too, potentially including relatively inexpensive and readily available pump shotguns.
While more accuracy never hurts, realistically if you can put your shots onto a paper plate at 50 yards, you're shooting well enough to keep rioters out of your front yard.0 -

No, there's no question here on my part. Just thought it would be a courtesy to anyone who might be thinking about buying one of these to know how mine worked out instead of having to rely on what some gun magazine writer says. When you're about to part with around $800 it's nice to know someone else had good luck with it.
I agree with your other points. I think Wisconsin's "flash mob" problems will cease after concealed carry goes into effect on November 1st. The Brits are going to have to sort out their own problems.0 -
That Yugo ammo is corrosive. Make sure you clean the gun in the next couple of days. [;)]
Don't forget the Gas Tube and gas port when neutralizing the corrosive salts with water.0 -

I had the old Marine Corps methodology drilled firmly into my head. Never go to sleep until your weapon is cleaned and clean three consecutive days after firing.
I start with a patch soaked with Windex w/amonia (I think it was gunwriter Mike Venturino that recommened that instead of watcr) followed up with Hoppe's No. 9 and a normal cleaning.0 -
Just make sure you hit the gas tube and gas port.
Easy area to forget with AK's.
Had wail on a buddies 5.45 tantal to get the gas piston free of the gas tube from all the corrosive 5.45 he'd shot through it.
Finally got it apart after soaking it all down with wd40. Gas tube was a rusted mess.
It cleaned up but wasn't pretty.0 -
I have never seen anything but good come from Arsenal USA. They have a topshelf rating at my house.
I have four AK's...three milled, and one stamped. One milled and the stamped came from Arsenal, and the SLR 95 I got off a guy at work who needed money for $300.00. The other is a genuine Poly-Tech Legend.
The SLR 95 is very accurate, but not in the AR league, and the other two milled are not far behind, with the milled being able to do 6 inch groups at 100 yards, if fed good ammo, and I do my part.

Just an additional comment on concealed carry handgun. CZ75 compact 9mm holding 14 rounds is an awesome carry gun. Shoots almost as good as the full size CZ and feels almost as good in your hand.0
