.22 Hornet Army air corp survival gun
A friend that sells by me at the flea markets came across a 95% or better condition
WW2 .22 hornet bolt action {missing the mag} survival rifle. It is perfect except missing the mag and the canvas{?} case. I think it was made by H&R. It has only a 12" or so barrel and a retracting wire stock. What do it think it is worth?? And any legal troubles because
of the short length? Thanks, Bob

If it looks like this it's a "M-4", we had a number of posts regarding them over the years. You might search are archives. Because of the barrel being less then 16", very likely it would cause problems with the feds. I got this photo off the net, the barrel looks legal on this one. The owner might have got a gunsmith to make a barrel longer then 16"?

I got to shoot one as kid, very cool. IIRC these were never sold and all of them outthere are considered stolen. 0 -
They were made by H&R and originally had 14" barrels which make them a short barrel rifle which requires federal registration. 0 -

Thanks for that auction lead, BTW. I do think it uses a more common mag too. I will get a good look at it in 2 weeks. My worry is how to get this possibly valuable piece of history sold, without breaking too many laws.[:(]0 -
With a barrel of less than 16 inches, the ONE law you need to be concerned about is possession on an unregistered Class III NFA weapon. A Short Barreled Rifle. Unless it is already papered, I do not believe you CAN paper it with the ATF.
Penalty for stepping wrong on this is 10 years in a Federal pen and $10K fine, along with loss of your girlish laughter, right to own a firearm, and winning smile. If it IS papered, you need to have it transferred thru a class III dealer in your home state.

When I see my friend again, I 'll think I'll tell him to pass on trying to sell it. He is a
retired Marine gunnery Sargent, and has a lot of "gray area" things stored from his military days. Many people bring him "things" from grandpa's attic if you know what I mean.0 -
If someone were were to find an unpapered M4 they could probably either replace it's 14 in barrel with a 16 incher of similar appearance or permanently attach some sort of muzzle device to bring it up to this length. Of course, that's assuming it's eventual overall length would be greater than the required 26 inches.
Altering the barrel length would of course destroy any collector value, but the fact that it's unpapered already rules that out.
At least they'd have an interesting conversation piece/shooter that's very close to an original M4.0 -
Why would this rifle not be able to "get papered" like many Winchester Trapper carbines with 12" and 14" barrels? I don't know the process for doing so, but I know these Winchesters are being offered for sale with ATF paperwork. If I were interested in such a WW II relic, it's sure something I'd look seriously into.

The Winchester Trapper's that are most likely papered, have a leter from the BATFE that state they arfe not an NFA firearm, but are an antique, or C&R. I believe the majority of them were made before the Firearms act of 1934, and the existance of the BATF. However, to be legal, they do need the paper from the BATFE approving them.
