Tell Me About This 1911 .45
My friend's dad is a WWII vet. This gun is part of his small collection of firearms he brought or sent home from Europe as trophies. I have feeling this one is more of a "liberated" gun than an actual trophy.
Anyhow, my friend has it now and he wanted to know how old it is, and possibly how much it is worth.
I remember seeing this gun when I was in high school. My friend would get it out when his dad wasn't home. The gun was kept, unloaded, under dad's mattress. The other guns, the actual trophies, were displayed on the wall in the den.

Model 1911 made by Colt in 1918. Doubt the grips are original though. Way the finish is all gone to gray, looks like somebody soaked it with one of those rust removal products? 0 -
Hello NUNN as a long time member you should know we need you to help us help you very hard to read serial number and this is the one single most important fact we need. if the serial is 411412 then it is in fact a 1918 Colt built pistol. however if the first digit is not a 4 then of course we will need you to tell us the serial. During the years before WW II the military inspected all stores of small arms and rebuilt those in poor condition. It looks like the barrel on your pistol MAY be original. if so this is a good sign and you can tell if original . it shoul have the two letters HP visible looking at the part of the barrel you can see with the slide closed and looking through the ejection port. . It would be interesting to know WHO & WHEN the grips were installed. The small parts do look correct from what I can see . would need detailed up close pictures of safety slide stop both front and rear sights we need VERY close up of rear sight notch. as well as hammer. I cant read the PAT. dates on the slide we need that as well as does it have "us government property" on the frame left front side[?]I suspect it has a value of a low of $500.00 if slide is not original to $700.00 if barrel and slide is correct . With original grips of the correct type even if worn add another $100.00 0 -
I recall reading in Gun Digest about folks out in the field paying around with Lucite aircraft canopy (cockpit). Some would place photos of girlfriends and such. But this metal flake nazi thing is new to me. I reckon some high on paint vato out in the valley had some candy and flake left in the can [:D]. Either that the fellow who owned this was an OG "Inglorious Basterds".
