Ruger MK II or MK III

I looking for a good reliable pistol for target shooting and varmints. I want reliability. Suggestions?


Do the safety features in the MK 3 change the reliability?

  Be aware that both are VERY GOOD pistols. The Mark II IMHO has a better magazine release and it does not have a loaded chamber indicator. I think this is a plus because the loaded chamber indicator itself is SMALL and was the reason for recalls when first came out it could bind and actually fire a cartridge .[:(!][V][xx(][:(]. Also be aware that if you are used to taking a MARK II down to clean."not the easiest thing to do" you will find the MARK III is different and you cant use the old mark II way one needs the hammer cocked and the other the hammer can not be cocked.

  I've owned, sold, and shot about 20 of the standard, MK1,MK2, and MK3 Ruger plus the 22/45 version MK2 & 3. I prefer the MK 2 over the MK3 because they seem smoother. The mag safety does cause some trigger issues on the MK3. I've never shot a Ruger 22 auto that wasn't more accurate than most shooters. The beat up 22/45 that I carry as a chore gun has been through all types of weather and abuse and it still functions 100%.Many times when I'm returning to the house, I'll stop at the yard gate,drop the mag, and fire the chambered round at a 8" round gong @ 110 yards. My hit rate is better than 80% which is about as good as I can do with an open sighted rifle. I have total confidence that the Ruger will do anything I can reasonably expect within the realm of the 22LR.

  Mark III, I like the loaded chamber indicator and the mag release position is superior to the Mark II. You want go wrong with either.

  I like my MkII in stainless. +1 for a Buckmark. But the best shooting autoloader I have is a High Standard HD Military.

  I agree the HD military is a good shooting pistol but I hesitate to shoot the one Dad gave me as much as I want to shoot a 22 pistol so I chose the next best thing. The Rugers are made every day and I don't mind wearing one out(or trashing it,losing it,dropping it down a well).

  I like the MkII (and, of course, the MkI).
  
  I do not care for the MkIII for handling issues and I truly believe that a loaded chamber indicator (LCI) is dangerous, rather than being a safety feature.
  
  (ranting on this now....) There are certain limited circumstances wherein a LCI might be a useful feature to certain very experienced shooters. However with a gun such as the the Ruger Mk series, where the gun's market and the majority of the buyers are recreational shooters, the LCI "shortcuts" safety procedures, the results of which could be devastating.

  Picked up a LNIB Mark II Target with Bull barrell for 275 today. I don't think it has been shot more than a few times.

  I have used the Mk I and currently have a Mk III I enjoy both. As has been said they will shoot better than most of us can hold. I bought the Mk III because I didn't want to carry my old Sport-King in the field any more and my S&W Model 41 is really too bulky, even if it is smoother and easier to shoot. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Ruger .22 auto line - just find the one that suits your wants and go with it - they are about as reliable as a tractor axle.

  As an aside, I read somewhere that the Ruger .22 MkI design was heavily influenced by the Japanese Nambu design, which I found interesting.
