45 70 seating depth issue

Using the bullet in split neck case and placing in chamber, I should be able to seat @ 2.9" overall. If I go beyond 2.65", I cannot chamber the round. Sharps/Pedersoli, no crimp on case. Would a taper crimp die take care of this, or how do I do it??? Thanks for any help...

Meant to say taper seating die.....

  I would bump one gently into the mouth of the sizing die (decapping pin removed, of course) and see if that put enough taper crimp on it to allow a long loaded round to chamber.
  
  A friend found his .40-65 would take a 2.90" round yesterday and apparently has room for 2.945".
  
  
  Why would you want to say taper seating die?
  A separate taper crimp die would be the right way to go. Combining taper crimp and seating seldom works out well.

  So what bullet are you using? You might consider doing a chamber cast on the longish side to get a look at the lead into the rifleing. You might also consider a bullet breach seating tool to incert the bullet into the bore then chamber a case with card wad on top to hold the powder in place.
