Colt cap and ball revolver
A friend has a Colt brand reproduction of the 1851(?) cap and ball revolver with a 12" barrel, unfired with all the papers and case.

Hello Bruce they made a number of different models we need the serial number to see if 2nd or third Generation also square back or round trigger guard. 0 -
I just went through the Black Powder Blue Book. It gives all the listing of the 2nd and 3rd generation Colt percussion revolvers, made in the U.S. from the 70's through 2002. Can't find any with a 12" barrel. Longest is the Walkers with 9". 0 -
If a repo, (yes?) won't be in the Colt book, (no?)
A few years ago I bought a "genuine Colt 1851". Parts made in Italy, pistol finished and assembled in Hartford. The arguments never ended as to whether this was a "real" Colt or not. I still feel that a bunch of Uberti parts stamped by Colt still makes an Uberti revolver.
One man's opinion.
That said, if it is one of these late model Colts, it would certainly be worth more than the typical foreign reproduction.
Also, just to really show my ignorance if I haven't done that sufficiently already, I thought the 2nd and 3rd generation distinctions applied to the SAA and NOT the 1851. ?????????[:D]

According to all of the Colt experts, Haven & Belden, Serven, and Wilson, Colt subcontracted the manufacture of many of its parts to sources outside its Hartford Factory from its earliest days. It is known that barrels, loading levers and frames were made for Colt by outside firms during the Civil War.
So, what's the big deal if Colt imported parts for their 2nd generation cap and ball pistols and had an outside firm (in the US) finish the parts using original Colt processes and assemble the guns under the close scrutiny of Colts Quality Control Department, using small parts and screws made in the USA? These guns are by any collectors standards genuine Colts and will letter to Colt.
As for the 3rd gen. Colt percussion pistols, they were assembled with parts from the same sources as the 2nd gen colts and were assembled by the same people that did the 2nd gen. pistols. The only difference is that the 3rd gen guns were made under license from Colt instead of directly by them.
One can easily see the difference between any Italian replica and their 2nd or 3rd gen. Colt. equivalent....The Italians don't even come close in quality. Likewise on the shooting range.0 -
I forgot to add:
Colt never made a 2nd or 3rd generation M1851 Navy with a 12 inch barrel. They were made only with 7 1/2" barrels.
Only 1 Italian company (not Uberti) made a replica with such a barrel, and it was not interchangable with any other company's reproduction without significant alteration.0 -
My Friend is going to trade the gun for a motor cycle worth 500 bucks. After I get my mitts on it I'll post pictures and get all the information I can. 0
