It's an early solid frame Model No. 4 boy's rifle. Most of the later ones were takedown, first with a lever on right side and latest with a large takedown screw on left side.

    They were made ca. 1890-1933.

Yup, a #4 .22. I have the M-#4 lever-style take down model as well, only mine is missing the buttplate and screws... which are very difficult to find.

Are my eyes deceiving me or is the barrel not rifled? Did they come rifled? I would think they would. Or, maybe after 111 years the rifling has worn out. Anyone have one that is?

From looks of the open breech, it's probably very high mileage and shot out. I don't think Remington ever made a smooth bore version, and if they did it would not have rifle sights.
