Colt SAA 7 1/2 serial XYZ

Can anyone tell me what generation this gun is? How do I contact BATYF to get new serial number? Thanks

    GOOGLE is your friend. Plug "batf" into GOOGLE and their web-site will come up.

    I would make sure you have all your ducks in a row prior to contacting them though, i.e. all the documentation from the seller, and transfer documents from your FFL. Screen shots from the auction also.

    I went through this a year or two ago. The site gave me the phone number and address of the nearest BATFE office. They will tell you to bring it in for inspection and if it appears as if the numbers were NOT intentionally destroyed or damaged in violation of the law, i.e. accidentally messed up during use or during bubba'ing, they can issue a new number you can have stamped on the gun and have it be the new legal serial number. BUT, not all guns have to have serial numbers. Yours may predate the serial number requirement. Don't go messing up a collector's item until you are sure it really does need a number. That XYZ may be the legal marking or it may mean something else and the gun may just predate the serial number date. Research before action is the way to go. [:)]

    I guess I didn't make myself clear. I agree with the validity of what was posted below. What I was trying to say was that if that XYZ marking ISN'T the serial number AND the gun predates the '68 requirement, don't go adding a serial number unnecessarily. It can damage the collector value. If the XYZ marking IS the legal serial number from the factory, BATFE will not change it. There is no minimum or maximum number of letters or numbers in a serial number, so XYZ just might be the legal serial. However, if it was made post-'68, AND the XYZ is just some marking and not a serial number, then BATFE will probably want one on there IAW the '68 law. Research BEFORE calling the feds. [:)]

    Wrong. There is no such thing as "pre-dating" guns that have already been serialized. Guns produced in or after 1968 were required to be serialized but those already serialized, such as Colts and Winchesters, can not be altered, defaced or removed.

    Read it and research it, "BEFORE" you contact the BATFE.
    Should your Colt be legitimate, and you contact them before you find that out, they can and will deface and destroy the value of the Colt with a new set of serial numbers.
    The morons there will make no effort to find out if it's a legit serial number.
    Ask member bigdaddyjunior what they did to his collector grade Krag rifle because they didn't even bother to look for the serial number.

    You just don't get it, do you? The collector value has already been damaged, unless it belonged to some great person. Most likely a cattle ranch is not going to be in that making, providing that was the true story behind it.

    Furthermore, that handgun, right now, as it sits, without the BATFE approval, IS ILLEGAL...what part of that don't you understand? After all the internet publicity given to this particular handgun, the last thing I would think anyone would want, is possestion of it.
