Remington 770 question
has anyone tried one of these,i have allways shot a remington model 700 270,saw one of these 770 remingtons in a 270,they are cheaper but are they any good...

the 770 is a budget entry and not like a 700. it is more compitable to a savage axis,a stevens 200 and a mossberg atr. all theses rifles are entry level and corners are cut to keep a mprice point. i do think the 770 is good if u are the type of person who goes out only 5 or 6 times a year. i just think for the money the stevens 200 or even a marlin xl7 is a better choice. please do a search history om the 770 on the forums 0 -
They're both bolt actions and both have the Remington name. That's the only thing they have in common! As said before the 770 is a budget model, save your money and buy the 700. It will save you a headache later! 0 -

The Remington 770 is the third rendition of a budget rifle that is purely JUNK. The series started with the 710, then went to the 715, and is now the 770. The beancounter's couldn't get it cheap enough the first time, so they have tried two more times. Even by today's crappy 700's, there is no comparison, and they are not even comparable to the lower priced Savage rifles, Marlin, or Stevens 200. Perhaps even the Mossberg is even a better rifle.
There are no after market fixes available, and I doubt it would hold together for five or six times in the feild, without having to be repaired. I know a gentleman, who had the bolt handle break off on the first shot.
As stated, and older used, in good shape Remington 700 would be the ticket.

I have a Model 770 7mm Rem Mag. I recieved 3 guns from my local dealer before I got one that would cycle the bolt somewhat. My gun has a 3 rd box mag. The bolt won't cycle the ammo from the mag unless there is only one in it. Sometimes you have to move the bolt back and worth to get that single round to load. The back of the action is plastic where the bolt slides on and the bolt is crudly finished metal causing the worst action I have ever felt. The barrel was stuck to the stock, almost though I was going to have to chisel it out off the stock. The two take down screws were stripped out. The grip cap fell off on 2nd trip to range. The scope that comes on it is now on my pellet rifle, still not good enough for it. The trigger was so hard it felt like you need a tractor to pull it. These are all problems I had. They also frequently have peolpe calling about the bolt handle breaking off.
NOW.... My gun once sighted in with a new scope, 4hrs of screwing with the trigger(don't do this, take it to a smith), spraying a heft coat of silicon lube on the bolt/action, 3hrs of painfully carving out the forearm to float the barrel to keep it from sticking to the stock, and just plain patience with the action I got it to shoot decent sized groups to be expected by this gun.
Save your self a whole lot of headache and buy a Model 700 SPS. They are about $500 on GB from my past searches.
I sent a 3 page hand written letter to Remington and told them of all the problems with my gun, and told them I had nummerous other Remington guns. They sent me back a letter and just repeated back to me everthing I wrote and said sorry about your gun, if you have any more problems with it we will be happy to look at it. BUT, would look at it for the CURRENT problems I had.
I just got a gun back from HENRY not long ago. It was mt cousins .22 that he had ground on the insides with a dremel. It wouldn't work so I email the owner asking how to get it fixed, he says send the gun to us with you name and address we'll fix it for you NO CHARGE! Now thats customer service!!!0 -
Take it fro ma dealer of 21 years. RUN AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN.. Get the Savage Axis combo. Same price or cheaper and NO problems. 0
