Colt SAA 7 1/2
I have a Colt SAA with all correct barrel markings in 45 cal with serial number XYZ on frame and under grips. The only other numbers are loading gate with colt pony, The gun is blue except for hammer and cylinder that are nickel. All writing is gold filled letters. Left side of frame is regular pat dates with pony logo Dates are Sep 19 71, July 2 72 and Jan 19 75. All letters as I said is gold filled. Can anyone tell me anything aboHeather, here is the colt that I would like to know about. Serial number XYZ. Thank you very much. Bill Flowers

I know that gun and called Colt about it. They never numbered the gun that way. I suspect it may have belonged to the "XYZ" ranch in New Mexico (where the seller was located) and they removed the original serial number and stamped their brand on it to prevent theft.
Since the original serial number was defaced & removed, I wouldn't bid on it nor would anyone else. It was listed several times before anyone bought it and it went cheap for a reason. I believe ATF would have a problem with the illegal removal of the serial number.

+1 on spider's comment. If this pistol was mine I would strip all parts including barrel and then sell the parts.But the first thing I would do is pull this post and Picture off of the internet. If not you might have BATFE come and pay you a visit. No problems with ATF because they haven't seen it - yet. The seller knew it was an illegally altered gun because I told him when he first had it listed. That's why he had to list it four times before anyone would bid on it. If it was legit, it would have sold for a lot more than it did.0 -
When you buy a gun & the dealer runs an NCIS (Brady) check, they only look at the buyer, not the gun. And, the dealer may, like some of us, know that Colt used to issue custom serial numbers if the buyer ordered it through a Colt distributor, so he assumed that the SN was OK.
Perhaps now would be a good time to send photos to ATFE & request a determination letter. If the gun is illegal, the worst that they will do to you is confiscate the gun, & you can request a refund from the seller.
Wait a few years, & your options may decrease....

Been a while since ive read the rules but before a certain year (196?) serial numbers were not required. If you could prove when it was done you may be able to get it legitimized with batfe. Would'nt hold my breath. How much did you have to pay if you don't mind? 0 -
Serialization of handguns was, and has been, the law since NFA. Long guns, since GCA.

Might want to consider two tubes & two names in the hat. The weapon is evidence of at least one & maybe two felonies. Destruction of evidence is another offense & would go along way to show that the owner of the weapon knew that the purchase & possession were illegal as is advising to either destroy or alter evidence. Frankly, I find it hard to believe that GB would even allow a sale of this weapon to be posted.0 -

That doesn't matter. If a gun was serialized, which all Colt SAA's were, you can NOT remove or deface the serial number under penalty of Federal Law. Period.

You can apply to have a new serial number.
I did it with some guns that were stolen and the serial no removed.

Cpermd is absolutely right. Application for a new serial number is correct. Gentlemen, I would never disassemble that beautiful old colt. What every liberal wants is to destroy firearms. Besides, to even consider dismantling it would be unethical and a SIN. As for the buyer/owner, contact the BATFE soon as to begin the new serial number process. Imagination being what it is, I wish the old antique firearms could talk. The stories they would tell us. Best 0
