Winchester 70 barrel
I currently have a New Haven model 70 in 300 wsm. I want to rebarrel it with a 270 wsm or 7mm wsm. I have found a couple different factory take off barrels and was wondering if the new FN model barrels will fit my action? How much work is involved?

Yes, the threads are the same, and the barrel will fit, but they are not just a plug and play. Most likely, the barrel will have to be indexed for the extractor, and the head space WILL have to be checked. It could quite possibly require removing up to as much as one whole thread, and rechambering to index the barrel, and headspace it properly.

It will most likely be less expensive, but you will be not that much off from having a new barrel installed by a good barrel maker. The gunsmith, will most likely have to buy or rent a chamber reamer, and possibly a headspace gauge if he does not have one. Then add on his labor, and you will have a healthy bill.

What would be a rough estimate of how much a gunsmith will charge for this job? Do you think that this will be a somewhat less expensive way of rebarreling my rifle compared to an after market barrel?0 -
