Smith and Wesson replacement barrels.
How can I tell whether a S&W revolver replacement barrel is so designed as to accept or not the pin to secure it to the frame?

None of the S&W replacement barrels are "designed to accept a pin". They are drilled after the barrel is installed, and the pin driven thru. The barrels are not pre-machined for the pin...unless you find a take off.

I can't attest to the notch in the top of the barrel...Numrich lists 'New, Replacement Barrels' with the notch plainly visible..however, it may be a stock photo.
I believe it's the thread design, and the thread course that determines the pinned-unpinned barrel.
The unpinned barrels have a thread designed to lock into the frame, and be set at the factory. Removal abuses both the male/female threads. Not so with pinned barrels. Joe

I'm looking at replacing the barrel on a 27-2, 3" for a 6 1/2" or 8".
I've seen at the auction side a blurry picture of what seems like a notch on the threads, but I may be wrong.0 -
I've a couple of takeoffs from J Frames; a 3" blue and a 1 5/8" SS and both are notched. I say notched because the grooves are milled and not drilled at assembly. That can be clearly seen under a loupe.
If one were to drill through an aluminum frame to a steel barrel the drill would walk away from the harder steel barrel, enlarge the hole and probably break.
The grooves look to be about 1 1/2 diameters wide to allow for tolerances.
Go ahead, buy your barrel and expect the pin to retain the barrel without alteration .0 -
I believe the pin groove is milled in prior to assembly..It must be located so the font sight alignment will be proper...JMHO
