Beer gut
Looking for opinions for store bought hunting ammo, White Tail cost is not an issue and looking to shoot any range capable for the round and shot chosen behind the shoulder or through it.

243 was thinking 95gr Hornady SST
25-06 was thinking 117gr Hornady SST
300WSM was thinking 180gr Rem Scirocco
30-30 was thinking 160gr Hornady Lever Evo
300Wthby was thinking 180gr NAB or 180gr TSX

Did anyone have success with these calibers and bullet selections or would there be better options easily available I understand I'm covering a broad area here just looking for the best projectile for clean successful kills in ranges the caliber can handle.

    I don't shoot the .300 WSM but do all the rest. The rounds listed are all perfectly reasonable choices. I really like the 30-30 Leverlution load, it probably adds about 25-50 yards to my Marlin 336. You will need to try them to see which your rifle likes best. My Ruger #1 .25-06 likes the 120 gr. W-W Positive Expanding point best of all I have tried in it. I use nothing but handloads in my Weatherby so I can't give you any ideas there.

    Those are all decent selections from what I can see. I have personally killed deer with everything from 17CCM, and 17 Fireball to 45-70, and lots inbetween.

    I might make one suggestion, if cost is not an issue. That would be to use ammunition loaded with the Barnes TSX bullet. That would mean...

    85 grain in the 243
    100 grain in the 25-06
    130-150 grain in either of the 300 magnums
    150 grain in the 30-30

    They present fine accuracy for hunting, even at long distance, and their on game performance is second to none. Because they are monolithic, and do not have a lead core to seperate, they retain almost all of their weight, and penetrate like no other...BARE NONE, that are of contolled expansion design.

    And, no...I a not a salesman from Barnes, just a person who has used their products

    I use the Hornady 117 grain load in my Ruger 77 .25/06 and it is pretty good stuff(I have used both the regular and their Superformance load--quite honestly I can't tell the darn difference in accuracy as I don't do much shooting past 300 yards although from the Hornady chart the Superformance load is supposed to have a little better trajectory). My brother in law is an exceptional rifle shot and has no problem hitting targets at 500 yards with this old Ruger--I just need more practice[:D]

    I have also used their .30/30 Leverevolution load and it's good ammo as well.

    I like well constructed bullets I use Barnes tipped slugs in my 12ga and love them but big bullet so expansion isn't an issue at least it hasn't been. I shoot rifles at targets and hunted deer with my 300Wthby but again extreme power and targets only accuacy mattered. It sounds like our area is going to approve rifles this year and I have many to choose from. I was afraid that a solid bullet like TSX or TTSX at only 90 to 100gr range would only put a pin hole at close ranges due to high velocities and even a well placed shot if the animal didn't drop blood trailing would be difficult. I would prefer the Scirocco's or TSX, is there any substance to my concern.

    As I have stated before, with the Barnes TSX, and TTSX, you have no worries of non-expansion. In fact, you can go with the lighter weight for caliber bullets, as they perform so well, with expansion, and weight retention. I will gaurantee, that you will se no other bullet with on game performance like these.

    Go to the Barnes website and watch the videos of the bullets in action. I had my doubts too, at one point, but after viewing the videos, I quickly changed my mind. And then, after having witnessed them in person...I can tell you, no need to be concerned...
