IMI Training Ammo
Me and a friend bought about 1000 rnds of these IMI training rnds in 5.56. Brass cased but with a plastic bullet. Was told they were training rounds or anti terrorist rounds. And not suppose to penetrate walls. Thought they be nice for plinking and short ranges. However, they didnt cycle our ARs. So just mainly used them for turtles. Today i went out and used them to sight in my red dot. Target was a 1/8 in steel plate out about 50yds. Did not expect the results from the plastic bullet.

the bigger dents are 45 acp, and the holes are from standard .223
The back of the plate:
Again i was suprised they would due that to steel. So i'm going to assume that they can take down small game, even though it makes my AR like a bolt action gun. I would think they penetrate alot of things.

They might have been designed to function semi-automatically in a AR that has either a larger gas hole in the barrel or one that has a gas block with manually adjustable orifices.
Back in the day when semi-automatic rifles were just coming into general use in Europe a number of military rifles were designed and produced with this feature. So that different types and bullet weights of ammo could function reliably.0 -
i thought they may funtion in a galil or AK in .223. but i dont have them to try it with. I know it wont cycle a mini 14 either. oh well, still pretty fun to shoot non the less. 0 -
"Practice" ammo is fun stuff.
It's hard to find now, but I've been using the Czech 7.62x54 and 7.62x39 practice ammo. Low recoil and cycles semi auto's.
The bullet is a copper jacket filled with plastic, 46grns, exits the barrel at 3800fps. Only good out to about 200yrds, but amazingly accurate, and hell on varmints!0 -

In more built up areas, plastic bullet 5.56 has been used by several countries for training due to it mimicking the trajectory of FMJ at short/medium ranges while having a greatly decreased maximum range.
The Israelis and others have also have been known to use them for riot control, but at such short ranges they're really much too lethal for this stuff.
As for them not penetrating walls, this is untrue. These are not air-soft like rounds for an M16.0
