Colt info needed!
My neighbor just came over and showed me his dad's old Colt Army Special 38 serial # 501020. Can someone tell me when this gun was made and what kind of ammo it uses?

According to two reference books I checked the Army Special #501020 was made in 1923. According to Colt Firearms From 1836 by James E. Serven the caliber would be .38 Special.
Added: Just checked proofhouse.com and found that their chart confirms what I have posted. I suppose that should nail it down pretty well.0 -

So do you think it would be safe to shoot a target load 38 special wadcutter in this gun? 0 -
It would be fine with wadcutters or traditional 158 gr roundnose lead. They haven't souped up the loads because there are so many nice old guns still out there. Plus P would not blow it up but I would not pound the old gun with it unless somebody were shooting at me. 0 -

I shoot standard pressure 158 grain loads through mine all the time. It also shoots well with 148 grain wadcutters. I would absolutely NOT run +p ammo through that gun. Back in those days the only hot .38 loads were designed for the N frame S&W .38/44 and not these smaller framed guns. Not to mention these guns are almost 100 years old. In an emergency sure if all I had were +p's but for everyday use standard stuff works just fine. My Grandfather used this one to kill pigs with-and back in the 30's & 40's all he used with 158 grain lead round nose.
