Remington 870 12 Gauge- 21"? 24"? 26"? 28"?

Going to be using a Remington 870 Express Mag for Turkey,Deer & Dove.Does the pattern get tighter with the longer length barrel's.Will be Rem choked of course to allow for differnet uses,but with the same choke,but different length barrel's will the pattern be denser or just have more velocity? Also is the 3 1/2 SUPERMAG OVERKILL For a occasional hunter? Thank's for your input.

  For my two-cents worth, I'd go with the 28 inch barrel for the handling qualities. The Rem-Chokes allow you to match the barrel to the task at hand. Believe me when I say the standard 2-3/4 inch shell will get the job done as long as YOU do your part.

  After about 18" velocity does not increase much. A longer bbl puts you that many inches clooser to your target. My "combat" 870 Express Mag is 31" in total length. With my standard hand load of
  3 3/4- 1 1/4- 5 its a handfull even with 8 rounds in it and 10 on the sling. With the Lyman sabbot slug I can do in a 3# coffie can at near 100 yards. I have never had the need to do 3" or 3 1/2".

  Short barrels are good for two purposes, home defense, and in heavy brush for upland game birds.
  A 26" or 28" barrel will give you a longer sighting plane, and a much better follow through on pass shots.
  A good rifle is only going to shoot as good as the scope on it. A shotgun will only shoot as good as the choke tube in it.
  Take any 3 factory choke tubes of the same choke, and you'll be lucky if they all hit to the same point of aim. Invest in a long taper extended choke tube, like Briley, best money you can spend!

  If you are going to use your shotgun for birds and deer I highly recommend you buy a slug barrel in addition to choked bird barrel.
  
  Barrel length has nothing to do with patterning. A long barrel though with an imprecise bead sight will not shoot slugs very accurately.
  
  Too add 3.5 is an advantage if you shoot steel shot. Otherwise the lead and heavy shot in 2.75 or 3in are more than sufficient.
