Glock Generations

Guys, my daughter has decided she wants a Glock 26 for her birthday. Glocks aren't really my area, but I understand that they are up to 4th generation. Just curious what generation everyone thinks is the best so I know what to be on the lookout for? Thanks for any assistance.

  Arguably the most recent one is the "best", but I'd say for your purposes, it really doesn't make that much of a difference.
  
  The major changes are adding stippling (G2) then fingergrooves (G3) to the grip, an under-barrel rail for mounting a flashlight (G3, something you probably won't do) and an adjustable grip insert (G4).
  
  There probably are some other minor changes along the way, but those are the ones you're going to notice.
  
  I'd say just pick whichever one in nice shape you can find the best deal on.

  There weren't any differences in the generations for the 26.
  EDIT--
  The grips all have finger grooves on them.
  I've had all three sizes of the 9mm,s.
  The 26 is the hardest one to control unless you have shot a lot.
  My suggestion would be the 19, it's not that much bigger.

  I think what you probably meant to say is that the barrels aren't long enough to put on a rail.
  
  Since the Glock 26 was introduced in 1995, there is no "first generation" Glock 26. They're all generation 3 or 4 and they ALL have fingergrooves:

  Note that you can always add a grip sleeve to a first generation Glock to create fingergrooves, if you want them.

  Just an FYI, all of the Gen. 4 Glocks, to my knowledge, have ambidextrious magazine release buttons.
  
  I agree with dcs, that a model 19 might be the ticket, unless your daughter has done a lot of shooting.

  Glock 19 is much easier to shoot. . .but much harder to throw in a purse.
  
  IMO you probably shouldn't be carrying a gun in a purse anyway, but that's a separate issue. The point is, how you're going to carry it will determine which model is most appropriate.
  
  You can improve the shootability of the Glock 26 fairly easily with a magazine extension. This doesn't increase the sight radius or barrel length any, but it does make the grip easier to hang onto with all fingers of the shooting hand, and can even approximate the grip of a Glock 19:
