Need some help.
I just got another SKS and this one still has the 10rd fixed mag. on it. How do you get this thing out? It looks like it should be easy but I can't get it. All help appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

Had a customer bring in a rifle today with a one piece Leupold quick release scope base on it. The base is held on with 3 screws that use torx head screws. The front two screws each has a broken torx driver jammed in them. Base must come off due to damage from dropping the scoped rifle. Anyone have a suggestion or know how to get the broken torx drivers out so I can remove the screws? 0 -
Dry ice held on the broken torx bits and then a firm tap with a punch.
This worked great on laser lens mounts in a clean room, it's all I've got.0 -
If you can get to them...A small grinding bit in a dermal. About the same diameter of the screw threads,{8/40?]. Use it like a drill bit to grind straight into the screw. When you get pass the screw head, the mount will fall off and you will be left with small "studs" sticking out of the action, easily removed because of no more tension on them. 0 -
The broken off Torx head wrenches doesn't sound right to me. It seems like somebody used the wrong grade of lock-tight or even epoxy on the threads for some reason. Even if you get the broken Torx wrenches out you might run into the same problem.
If all else fails you might have to resort to cutting the heads off of the screws by plunge cutting them with a end mill. The Leupold base would of course be scrapped out, but that would be the least of your problem.
I've heard that epoxy breaks down if it's frozen in a freezer but, never tried it. Heat is a iffy proposition because to much might mess up the finish on the rifle. Let us know what works?0 -
I think the idea of super-cooling the broken torx driver heads (one at a time) and then trying to shatter them with a quick, sharp, concentrated blow to a pin punch might get the torx drivers out.
I don't care for the idea using a dremel or some other imprecise method of drilling out the broken torx driver. Too much room for error.
Another thought is to, instead or dry ice, go to an electronic parts house and buy a can of freeze spray and shoot a steady stream of the stuff onto the broken torx drivers and then try to shatter them. If you use this stuff, use face and eye protection and a pair of gloves.
If you get the broken drivers out without damaging the screw heads, try freezing the screw heads and then try to remove the screws with a very high quality torx driver.0 -

Some types of locktite will release with the application of heat..I use a soldering iron to concentrate the heat in a small area...Doesnt damage the overall finnish as a torch flame would...Good luck..

41 nut---I too have broken the torx head drivers that fit in the screw driver handles, but never the little allen wrench type that comes with the bases. First thing I would do is soak each screw with Kano Kroil. Then every time I walk buy the gun, I would give each broken driver, (still in the screw head), a smack with a quality punch. Don't mushroom the top of the broken driver. Three or four of these may get the broken driver to free-up in the screw head. They might just fall out, or mabey a magnet. If this doesn't work, eventually you are going to have to try to drill the broken torx driver. Then use a small easy out. Since there are no threads involved, we only need to "free it" in the screw head, and it should come out. Before you attempt to get the torx screws out again, I would add more KROIL, then, using a new Torx Driver, I would put the driver in the torx head, and smack it several times again. You are NOT trying to grind out the threaded part of the screw. Only grind into the head of it, when you get just pass the shoulder of the screw head, it will pop off and look like a small washer.
Do NOT try to use a drill bit on a hardened torx bit broken piece, it will just slip off and ruin what is next to it.0
