It is a target model revolver I have one and it is a very good shooter. If it was military it would be proofed and I would think that if it was a police issue revolver it would also be proofed.

OK. Scratch the last. Because of the "S" prefix I was thinking it was an "N" frame, but Smith also made Post war Pre-model 10 revolvers with "S" prefixes from 1945 to 1948. They also made a light weight version with alloy frame later called the model 12. Your gun is likely a pre-model 10. Smith began using model numbers on their revolvers in 1957.

    How long is the barrel?

Thats sounds about right, they were made with 2" 4" 5" and 6" barrels.

These are my model 10's with 2" 4" & 6" barrels. does it look like these.

Like this one? This is a larger model 27 with the speedy loader cutout.

Or is the cut out more like this?
