22 cal bullet recommendations

Since I have all of the components, and dies, etc. I'm thinking about building a 22-250 AI, with heavy bbl. 26"+, 1" muzzle dia. on Rem. 700 SA. Probably a 1-9 twist. Looking for best accuracy I can get. I know trial, and error is the final answer, but----Any recommendations on powder, and bullet combinations will be appreciated. Since I can only shoot about 100 yds., are heavy bullets going to be an advantage? THX HAWKSHAW

  22-250AI @100 yards seems to be quite a waste but it's your idea. My advice would be a bullet in the 53-55 grain range, flat base, hollowpoint. I had excellent results with the older Hornady 53 grain FBHP match in a standard 22-250-no problems with inflight blowup out of a 1-12 twist. I've tried some Hornady 50 grain tipped varmint bullets in my frankenmauser 220 Swift but only at 3600fps. Possible bullet failure with the thin jacket varmint bullets from a 1-9 @ the velocities possible from the 22-250AI.

  Hornady 75 grain A-max and Varget should do you very well.

  my advice is use a 40x single shot action and chamber it for a 220 swift. Case is much stronger and classic loads with 52-55 grain pills will fill the bill. My favorite powder is 4064. Loading data for the 22 250 AI is the same as the swift anyway. The 40x action will easily support a full floating barrel the 700 wont. Thats what we benchresters discovered years ago. If your talking top accuracy.

  Since you have a commitment to the .22-250AI, the Swift is a lost cause. Norma is the only manufacturer of decent brass these days and they're getting OVER $1.00/case. The current run of Remington and Winchester brass is garbage with a capital 'G'.
  
  I just got my shipment of Lapua .22-250 brass last week and it's superb.
  
  As to touting the 40X for the reason cited, I suggest getting a BAT, Surgeon or Badger Ordnance for an eye-opening experience these days. The 40X had its day and is still a decent single shot but it can't be compared to the current custom actions. I still shoot a couple of 40X but the BAT is like Night and Day better.
  
  The limiter here is your range of 100 yards since this cartridge with some bullets has an accuracy range of several hundred to 1,000 yards. Most will suggest using the lighter 50 grain weight class of bullets but I think this is a waste of powder and capacity. The 50 class bullets are accurate and will yield a good consistency but why hold back? Look for the opportunities to take it out to stretch its legs!
  
  I found that the Hornady 75 grain AMAX is very nearly the ideal bullet for this case especially considering your barrel length and twist rate. I went so far as to have a reamer ground specifically for this combination to save me from having to use a throating reamer in a secondary process.
