500 Yard Rifle

I need a rifle that is accurate at 500 yards with factory ammo. What do you suggest?

  First we need a few more parameters. Hunting accuracy or target? What do you intend to hunt, if you are hunting? Most good quality modern rifles are capable of better accuracy than most shooters can utilize. Modern factory ammo is much more consistent than it used to be and the upper end lines are generally very good. A few things come to mind - caliber; between 6mm and .35 - action; bolt or single shot - sights; good glass either 4X to 8X fixed or variable starting at 2X - Manufacturer; Huge selection here just a question of what feels right to you and what fits your budget.

  Fuelie, has listed some very good considertions. Add to them recoil tolerence, and budgetary constraints. Also as previously stated, the optics are a big part of an accurate rig. These days, plan on spending as much or more for glass, as the actual rife itself, if you are looking for consistancy. Yes, there are some bargains out there in glass, that will work for the entry level shooter, but the first time you look thru something better, you will realize that you will be trading up.

  You didn't specify much but for some of the best bang for your buck look at Sako, Tikka, Weatherby, Savage. BIL has various rifles in the first 3 brands I mentioned and they are all tack drivers out past 500 yards.

  Impossible to give you a detailed answer without more information:
  
  a. What do you intend to shoot with this rifle? (EG: Paper targets, groundhogs, zombies, etc).
  
  b. What do you mean by "accurate"? (IE what group size at 500 yards are you looking for?).
  
  c. What's your budget?

  Sorry about taking so long to get back. I intend to shoot in the Appleseed. 500 yard paper target, open sights. I have a 7mm but the barrel is about gone. I have a $1500.00 budget for the rifle.

  Used by the US military to do just that:
  M1 Grand
  1903
  AR-15 A2
  M1A
  
  Other capable:
  AR-10
  FAL
  PTR-91/G3
  MN 91/30
  K98
  
  That is a short list that quickly comes to mind.
  
  The key at that kind of range is the shooter. Practice, practice and practice. A good shooter with a bad gun will out shoot a bad shooter with a good gun any day of the week. I only have a 300 yard range but I can make 90% hits on a 12" plate with my bolt action .22 and 7x scope. I did not do that overnight.
  
  EDIT: Had thought about the Enfield but due to low availably of ammo had kinda left it off. I have looked at a few of those rifle but the lack of ammo has steered me away. Might be time to look again. Yes I do reload but still having a base supply off ammo to reload is nice. Prvi makes some nice cost effective ammo.

  i'd like to add one more to john's list
  enfield .303 no 4
  lots were bubba'd in the 70's and can be had for less than $300
  the 1945 longbranch guns rarely saw any action and are great shooters.
  the .303 milsurp supply is gone, but PRVI, among others, is making .303.
  for me, the enfield is more accurate than my garand

  With a $1,500.00 budget you can get an M1 Rifle through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Other good choices would be the M1A and AR 15. Ammo availability and expense should be a major factor.

  There are two different ways to go about this problem:
  
  1: You can buy an old military rifle that was not considered
  accurate when it was still in service and look really cool at
  the match when you finish in the bottom of the pack, or...
  
  2: You can use that same amount of money to buy a quality
  used "Palma", "Silhouette" or "Highpower" rifle and finish at the
  top of the field while listening to others make excuses why their
  rifle didn't shoot very well.
  
  All three of the competitions listed above require quality custom
  rifles that use iron sights and shoot small little groups between
  600 and 1000 yards. You should have no problem finding a good
  used example withen you price range with sights.
