1885 Winchester question -- Bert?
Did all of the 1885's come with 30" or longer barrels, or were there any short one's made?
Thank you!
Thank you!

I'm not Bert, but I have seen pictures of shorter Single Shots.

Hello Gary,
The standard barrel length was determined by the specific caliber/cartridge. So, in answer to your question
quote:Did all of the 1885's come with 30" or longer barrels
The answer is No. Standard barrel lengths ranged from 24-inches (.22 rimfire cartridges) up to 30-inches (for the the larger center fire cartridges).
If anyone would like to know what the standard barrel length was for a specific cartridge, please post a new question.0 -
What should the barrel length be in a 38-56 caliber high wall. Was it ever available in a 24" barrel? Are the Winchester letters accurate, can the letter say one thing, and could the rifle be a little different?
Thank you!0 -
Gary,
The standard barrel length for the 38-56 WCF was 30-inches. If the barrel length does not match the factory records, it was cut-down. For the Model 1885, the barrel length is listed for 99.9% of the serial numbers, and Yes, the factory records (Cody letter) are very accurate for the Model 1885. If you would like a double check of the records, please post (or send me) the complete serial number.0
