AR-15 dust cover
You are about to learn again that I am not an AR guy---About a year ago I took my DPMS .223 to the range fired a few rounds, and put it back in the case. Yesterday, I got it out, and noticed that the dust cover over the ejection port is missing. No mark or anything. Did I shoot it with the cover closed? I don't know. I thought they were made to do that! Info please. THX HAWKSHAW

They are made to pop open when the bolt is pulled back.
It's possible the pin was put in backwards and worked it's way out.0 -

Are you certain it was a model that had a dustcover? Their sportical models, I believe do not have a dust cover. That goes for the AR-15's, and the AR-10 based rifles.

It shouldn't hurt to fire with the dust cover closed. "Back in the day" we would chamber a round at the start of a patrol and snap the cover closed to keep cr_p from getting in and fouling the bolt. The bolt recoiling from the first shot will just pop the cover open. [:)] 0 -

That's what the dust cover is designed to do.
As suggested, are you sure it had a dust cover originally? If so the pin may have worked it's way out w/o you noticing it.0 -
