stupied question about 38 super +P
now i looked at the Federal websight today looking at a few difrent ammo's they have just to see if they still made hydra shock 357 for my friend. and i happend to just for the hell of it look at 38 super +P
now i noticed that it runs as fallows.
AE38S1 130gr FMJ runs at 1200 FPS
AE38S3 115 gr JHP runs at 1150 FPS
now knowing what i know about the 9mm largo
its designed was according to the manual i have 130gr bullet at 1200 FPS
and i know that it in reality was a 127-129gr bullet running at 1120-1210 FPS depending on when it was made.
no i know how the gun can be made to use the 38 super cases being my uncle did it back in the day ie to moderate 9mm largo loads.
but giving this is a light loading for 38 super, to me it looks more like a 38 ACP load
could a person shoot in in one of the guns, if they had a brand new spring recoil spring that is some what stronger then the OEM spring.
the spring i have in my now is quite stiff its one made by wolf springs (http://www.gunsprings.com/Semi-Auto%20Pistols/STAR/B%20%26%20SUPER%20.38%20%26%209mm/cID1/mID61/dID277), i got it becuse the 1977 9mm largo is quite hot, actualy runs about the same is the 38 super +P "AE38S1" ammo

My personal experience is that the Spanish made pistols for 9mm Largo cartridges, aren't quality wise equivalent to the Colt made .38 Supers, either in workmanship or materials. If your figuring on shooting .38 Super in your Star do it on your own dime, don't be getting us involved in it. 0 -
i am just asking, from what i have read that 115 gr running what it is in the Federal ammo is quite light. considering most of what i seen for hand loading and other loads its running more around 38 ACP specs.
38 super would run about 1250-1350 FPS.
im just asking being that its so light, would it be ok to shoo it in the gun,
and yes i do know you cant run a full tilt load from a 38 super in there.0 -
Rufe is correct, I own a couple of the Super Modelo's and I love them. I would definately stick to the factory ammo with these pistols. I don't even reload for mine due to the cost and availability of ammo. That being said, they are definately not as well built (material wise) as any of the major MIA guns. 0 -

The use of cartridges that produce too much chamber pressure is also discouraged. Yes, the .38 Super and 9x23mm Winchester will chamber in most 9mm Largo firearms, and if they will chamber they will fire. The metallurgy and design of the Modelo Super were not developed to handle the pressure of these rounds. Use of these type cartridges in the Modelo Super risks damage to the pistol and possibly yourself through a ruptured chamber, fractured slide, or fractured frame.
Again I am not bashing these, I own two and shoot them regularly.0 -
i supose realistic i can just stick with running what i can get for mil surp 9mm largo in it,
just nags at me, being the 115gr stuff there is so dam light.

You are comparing apples to oranges. The working pressures of a cartridge has many more things involved than just bullet weight and fps. The .38 special launches a 110 grain bullet at 1100 fps and it has HALF the psi's of a .38 super. A normal 12 gauge shot shell
throws 1 1/8 Oz. out at 1250 fps and it makes less than 1/3 of the pressure of your .38.
Be careful, trying to rationalize "theories" why you can use the wrong ammo in a gun.0 -
+1 Babum very well said. Ryan you sound like a guy that needs to take up reloading. I think you should concentrate more on actual proformance on paper ie accuracy etc than alledged data from the sellers. 0 -
i have been looking into reloading 9mm largo, spendy though sadly.
i am planing to call stars and strips and see if they can load 124gr XTP stuff.. and see what ammo is going for there.
figure maybe i can get a box or 2 of some pre loaded stuff to get some brass atleast.
i so load other stuff. ie rifle but haven't touched pistol yet.
btw i emailed federal to see what they do load that 115gr stuff to presure wise, maybe atleast i can get some info to pass on to others looking for some light loadings.
btw anyone got any good loading data for 9mm largo thats recent?0
