.455 mark II cartridge

is the british .455 mark II cartridge the same as the colt .455 eley? thanks in advance.

  Hello I believe the .455 MK II was cordite smokeless powder and thus higer pressure then the MK I or the .476 or .455 ELEY Different books seem to not agree on if the case is the same or Eley shorter.

  Ken Waters says the .455 Mk I was black powder in a .88" case,
  .455 Mk II was smokeless in a .76" case, and the .455 Colt Eley was smokeless powder in the longer Mk I case. It was more common outside England, he had a New Service revolver and some CIL factory loads for it.

  thanks, but can the .455 mark II be safely shot in a .455 eley colt revolver?

  I have not tried it but would not hesitate to shoot regular .455 Mk II (Webley) in a Colt New Service. I dare say the New Service is a stronger gun than any of the Webleys and possibly stouter than the S&W .455s.

  Actually, there's no such thing as a "Colt .455 Eley" as Eley was just a cartridge company, and did not make guns or design the .455 cartridge. Barnes' Cartridges of the World identifies the .455 Colt cartridge as Colt's name for the .455 Revolver Mark 1 cartridge.

  Nomenclature apparently depends on whether you are Colt or Eley.
  
  In Ken Waters' Pet Loads, the CIL-Dominion amunition box is labeled .455 Colt.
  But his GUN is roll marked "Colt New Service .455 Eley."
