"Good" rifle in 308?

What would be a good, yet inexpensive, used rifle to purchase using the 308 caliber? I'm not looking for a high-end "sniper" rifle, just something that could be a general use target or hunting rifle using a caliber I've heard a lot of good reports about. I assume bolt action would inherently be the more accurate version, but semi-auto is fine as well. Prefer a "name" manufacturer with some years worth of track record. Thoughts?

  .308 is a standard caliber, all manufacturers make one in that chambering, as far as I know. Savage/Stevens rifles are very good value for the money. If your looking for a used one now is the best time to buy, before hunting season fever starts kicking in in August.

  Remington 700 is always a winner, Winchester model 70, Ruger M77 are all good examples of working rifles with solid reputations that are reasonably priced and widely available.

  I just bought a Savage Edge in .30-06 on clearance for 289.00. Very pleased with the accuracy of it.

  With those requirements you'll end up buying something that is a compromise - either a bit or very heavy for walking about hunting and too light a barrel to be truly a target rifle. Trigger and stock requirements for each are different too. Maybe try a CZ 550 Varmint or American model with a walnut stock. The gun has a set trigger and a regular trigger and a general excellent rep for accuracy.
  
  Maybe you ought to consider a T/C Encore with two different barrels.

  Depends a little bit on what you mean by "inexpensive". If you want something for "serious" target shooting, you're going to have to pay for something with a match barrel and trigger.
  
  Also, don't forget to budget for your scope too; that's a fairly significant additional expense.
  
  While its possible to create an accurate semi-auto rifle, accuracy usually comes quite a bit cheaper with a bolt-action rifle, and unless you plan on bringing the gun into combat, a bolt-action is the way to go.
  
  In general, Savage is a "best buy" in terms of building a rifle that has a decent trigger and is accurate out of the box for relatively little money.
