With the exception of Washington State, where machine gun parts are restricted, the DEMILed items are just parts. The procedure for DEMILing receivers has changed quite a bit over the past 20 years (saw cuts are no longer allowed on new imports) but existing DEMILs which were saw cut back in the day are fine.

Gosh, I wonder if anyone has ever thought about buying those saw cut machine gun receivers and welding them back together, beating out that pesky need to file for federal full auto transfer? Wow. I'll bet the BATFE guys have NEVER thought of that one or even have a penalty for it. LOL [:D]

I'm confused. I was under the impression that just owning the M16 parts that would convert an AR15 to full auto was illegal.

I was told even without owning an AR15 it was a no no. Is that not true?

    Not true.

You can own an AR-type rifle & any M16 full auto parts you want, & it is legal. ATF strongly recommends that you NOT install certain M16 fire control parts in your AR; if you do, AND the gun fires > once with a single trigger pull, then you are in deep trouble. The rifle could go FA due to parts wear, manipulation (including use of tools), or welding on scraps of metal; it doesn't matter, you have screwed the pooch.

The only group of AR parts that is considered an illegal machine gun if not registered (even without the rifle) is the AR-15 DIAS (Drop In Auto Sear).
