I'm looking for a reliable 1911, open to cal.and make .But I won't be shooting in compition and don't want to tie up alot of dough. any suggestions? thanks Bob 0 -

GHD would signify that it is a Colt frame. This is a standard 1940's Colt 1911 made for the Government. 0 -
LETTERS GHD stand for inspector Lt.Col.Guy H.Dewry. Your colt frame dating from 1944. Be aware it looks like someone tried to Sand/Grind the serial number and crossed cannons off the side of the frame. This and the writing on the other side U.S. Government Property . You can do anything you want to as far as removing markings .EXCEPTdefaceing the serial number . This is against federal law. The U.S. government property will not get you in trouble as Thousands of pistols were sold as surplus Years ago. 0 -
The pic does make it look like the serial number was defaced but in person there are no grind marks or buffing, it is just worn, still readable. Thank you for helping guys I appreciate it. 0 -

The grips are fixable, but the other cosmetics would cause valuation problems. FMV would probably be in the $350-$550 range at this point in time. For insurance purposes value it at $600.0 -
