Crescent Arms was one of several manufacturers in the New England area. Most were in business from the late 19th century to the period between the world wars. They often made guns under contract for hardware chains and put the chain's name on the guns. These were "farm" guns meant for utility service and do not command significant collector interest. In good working condition they bring $75-150.00. The bore is PROBABLY 20 guage, but needs to be checked by a gunsmith, for safety sake.

The color on the receiver taht sort of looks like oil floating on water is what is commonly called CASE COLOR or CASE HARDENED. Do not try to do anything but oil this part of your shotgun . It looks in better condition so be careful you don't damage what is left of the original finish. It will not be a hight $$$ gun but the condition is much better then most. [^][:)]

As said, the gun is a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. A "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is one that was by a major maker (and before 1940) for and was sold by a wholesale sporting goods dealer, a retail chain store or an independent seller. Guns with the name VICTOR were made by the Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1931) for and were sold at wholesale by the Hibbard Spencer Bartlett company of Chicago, Il. Take a look on the bottom tang (the part of the frame that extends back into the butt stock) and just behind the trigger guard and you will find the serial number of the gun. Post that number and we'll tell you the year the gun was made. That list of Crescent made "Trade Brand Names" looks very familiar.

    The serial number is:
    588
    900

exactly like that on the gun.

Gun was made in 1925 according to that serial number (588900). Also although the gun shows it age (that's to be expected) it's in pretty good condition. Value should range in the $100 area.
