I have this old cartridge marked 22 Ex. Long?
I bought a collection of firearms at an estate sale and part of the transaction included a box of mixed old ammuntion, in this mix of ammuntion there was a 22 Ex. Long centerfire cartridge W. R. A. Co. also in the headstamp. I did a search on the internet all I came up with is the 22 Ex. Long rimfire cartridge. Can anyone tell me something about this cartridge? What rifles were made for it? Picture shows a 223 and a 22 LR in comparison, second picture is of the head stamp, sorry its blurry but its small.

The 22 Extra Long rim fire was developed in the year 1886, and it was first chambered in the Winchester Model 1885 Single Shot Rifle (serial number 1332 was the first rifle). It was later added to the Model 1904 bolt-action single shot rifle in 1914. It survived in the Model 04 up through the year 1927. 0 -

I believe his CENTERFIRE .22xl predates the rimfire by about 4-5 years.0 -

"22 EXTRA LONG (Maynard)
The 22 Extra Long centerfire is one of a series of cartridges for the Model 1882 Maynard single shot hunting and gallery rifles. It is, in effect, a centerfire version of the 22 rimfire Extra Long. It originall used the small number 0 primer which has not been manufactured for many years. It was replaced by the longer 22 centerfires and the 22 WCF. Ballard and Stevens rifles were also available in this caliber
45 gr lead bullet, 8 to 10 grs of FFFg or FFFFg black or semi-smokeless powder, case lengths of 1 5/32" to 1 1/4", MV 1100fps, ME 122."0 -

.22 MAYNARD EXTRA LONG CENTER FIRE - Originally created as a reloadable version of the old rimfire .22XL, this is an exceptionally cute caliber. Brass is available from two sources (Bertram and the people that make a similar modern case), and probably would last forever if breech seated. It does not offer any improvement over a rimfire in the field, but is interesting as the smallest reloadable case. You can even use black powder, a recommended load being 9.5 grains of FFFG with 50 0r 55 grain bullet. A suggested barrel is .224 with 14 twist. Original rifles were .226 or .228, so the old molds are not of much use. It is possible to use Lyman 224438 or equivalent, omitting the gas check. Unique powder works well, and probably many pistol powders would be as good. For a real challenge, you could try hollow point bullets for squirrel shooting, although flat nose bullets are also very effective. This caliber has very little to recommend it for target shooting, but it could be used for centerfire gallery loads if there are such matches in your area.0
