vietnam war shotgun
I remember once seeing a shotgun that was described as a Vietnam war trench gun,
All I can remember about it is that it was semi auto, had a wood stock, a barrel shroud and a bayonet lug.
Any idea what gun this could be.

The semi-auto mechanism doesn't sound correct. Semi-autos were used during W W II for gunnery training and recreation. They weren't set up a Trench guns though, as far as I know. 0 -

Well, I was in an 'Armament section' over there. we had win. m-12's,1200's, & 97's, Ithaca m-37's, Sav. m-520's, and A rem. M-11 (but no hand guard/bayo. mount). 0 -
We also had Winchester and Stevens, but I was assigned a Remington 870. 0 -

During the Vietnam era unpleasantness, Remington produced two auto loading shotgun with barrel shrouds and bayonet lugs; the first was their Model 7180 which was based on the 1100 commercial gun and in fact there was a kit that could covert an 1100 into a 7180. There were about five variations of the 7180 and none are common. Even rarer was the Remington 7188 which was a selective fire version of the Model 1100, had all of the expected trench gun features and there were at least six variations of the selective fire guns. As far as anyone can find out the Navy purchased a dozen 7188s for the SEALS and the US Secret Service at least two for executive protection use. Since these shotguns were not standard issue items and were unsupported theer is no NSN number for either and the chances of ever seeing one 7180 or 7188) is slim to none. 0
