    I am interested in a winchester 1897 riot shot gun 85 to 90 percent blue and stock marked L.A.P.D from about 1926 solid frame butt has shock pad not original butt plate and a lynan cutts cutts 705 F.C. My question is how bad do these things hurt the value and what would aproximent value

    Read NO. 42 of the suggested procedure. It is an adjustment for a snug barrel fit. If the adjustment was set-up for a different barrel you may need to adjust it to fit the replacement barrel.

    I just took a quick look at the dis-/re-assembly manual at the link posted as noted. It is not a bad manual and looks pretty informative, however I think a few critical points are not covered (but then, I just skimmed the manual and did not study it.). Anyway, be aware of the following, which is based on my experience and is my opinion only. You should do what you think is best for you:

    What this manual does not seem to say (maybe it does; I just skimmed it) and what has not been discussed here is removal and reinstallation of the "Barrel Extension", part #5 (take-down versions of the guns only), from the barrel itself.

    This Barrel Extension is a very critical part, pretty expensive, compared to the value of the gun and very easy to damage. There is a special tool required to safely and properly remove and replace it. I have seen them easily damaged by unknowing novices and I advise that you do not try to remove the Barrel Extension without that special tool. I think Wisner's has the tool for sale; not sure.

    Also, I will not go into exquisite detail regarding the following advice, however each barrel was "fitted" to the "Barrel Chamber Ring", which itself is fitted into the Receiver of the gun (usually a tiny screw on each side of the front of the receiver). Leave it alone! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER remove/disassemble part #7, the "Barrel Chamber Ring" from the Receiver. From the factory, for each take-down version of the gun, the Barrel was "fitted" to that Barrel Chamber Ring and replacing the Barrel can cause extraction problems. Removing and reinstalling the Barrel Chamber Ring can be the cause of similar extraction problems either with the original barrel or a different one. The ring and the barrel "chamber" itself need to be in perfect alignment.
