what kind of spec for an end mill should I have to be able to "skulpt" scope bases such as conetrol and leupold?
Is the diameter involved or the radius??

Are you talking 'cutter' or 'machine'?

If you are talking about the radius to fit the rifle, there are three ways I can see to do it. One; have a vice that swivels. You will have to set the radius by length of cutter to part. rock it back and forth or take passes with the bevel set to overlap cuts. Two; an end ball with the radius you desire. Three; stand the part on end in the side of your vise and use a fly-cutter and cut the radius you want by adjusting length of cutter.
Next, chuck a drill of the right dimension in your collet and drill the screw holes. Counterbore/sink for the screw heads.
For the rail, it would be nice to have the vice that can swivel/bevel, but I think you are going to have to find a way to clamp the piece in using sliding parallels/parallels to support it in the vice. To cut the base/head angle underneath it would be great to get an endmill with a chamfer. That way you are taking a 90 deg. on the side and the bottom angle of the rail. Flip the piece 90 deg up and cut the top angle. Once that is done it's just cutting grooves across the top for the clamp-bar.0 -
Radius of a ball end mill would be half the diameter. Get hold of some radius gauges to discern what the ones used on the leupold and conetrol bases your trying to duplicate.
Be advised your going to have to fabricate a special fixture or have a vise with a compound index head to free hand small parts like scope bases on a vertical mill.0 -
Are you making alum. or steel? You can use a drill to rough out a hole. Then use a boring bar w a boring head(R8 shank best) to bore a hole in a block of steel. Drill and tap the holes. Use a cutting wheel to separate the two pieces. Then you can finally shape the outside contour to your liking. 0 -
You need to duplicate the radii of the sample that you wish to produce. The particular cutter needed? Likely doesn't exist, at least OTS - so prepare to have one custom-ground.

I dont believe I stated my query very good ititially. I want to "skulpt" out the sharp corners of the square bases. I am not concerned with the radius of the bottom of the bases. Just "cove" out the tops like leupold bases. 0 -

As the previous poster noted if you want to duplicate a specific radius similar to the ones on the Leupold bases, you will first have to identify the radius with a radius gauge. If you can't obtain a stock cutter that will give you the same or similar radius you will have to have a custom one fabricated. It would probably be best if you could obtain a used or stock cutter with a similar radius rather then having a custom one fabricated for just one set of bases.0 -

Do you want to make Leupold bases, and aren't use sure what endmill to use for the corner?
I'm guessing that the end mill will be about 1/8". I will have to measure a set to be sure.0 -
Your going to have to define "skulpt" because it isn't in a machinist dictionary. Sculpting is something an artist does.

Something in the line of a 1/4" ball nose end mill will do what you want. 1/8" wide cut by 1/8" deep will give you a nice 90 degree scallop cut. 0 -
