G.MADIS has it as a first year rifle, but he has been wrong in some of his dates, BERT H. will be along to give you the right year. eastbank. 0 -
Model 1892 serial number 22000 was manufactured in December of 1893... most definitely not a "first" year gun. If you will provide the complete serial number, I can determine the exact day it was manufactured. 0 -

Would this indicate that the barrel has been replaced at some point in its life? Its wear appears to be honest. It has a 2 line "address" that says "MANUFACTURED BY THE" in the first line and "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A." in the second line - all forward of the rear sight dove tail. At the rear of the barrel near the receiver ring is "38 W.C.F." Could the records be in error? Have I traded a nice 1843 Ames Navy pistol for a parts gun?0 -
Yes, it does indicate that the barrel has been replaced. So yes, you unfortunately do have an expensive parts rifle[:(]. 0 -
are there any proofmarks on barrel top near receiver ring? 0 -

Not on any of the three upper flats, I haven't pulled the forearm to look underneath.0 -
The presence of, or the lack of proof marks on the barrel tells us nothing. Winchester did not begin using the superposed "W" & "P" until 1905. The proof marks are the most often faked marking found on an old Winchester[V]. 0 -

This just keeps getting better and better. I called the guy I bought it from, but he is in for surgery. Hope he will do the right thing.0
