Carcano Magazine question

On the bottom of the magazine on a Manlicher-Carcano carbine there is a rectangular slot. What is the purpose of this opening? Also, does the MC require use of a stripper clip or some other magazine loading device? would this device be associated with the slot in the bottom of the magazine.

Any info on MC magazine and loading procedure would be appreciated.

  It uses an enbloc clip like the Garand, only single-stack.. The clip drops out the bottom after the last round is chambered..
