Military Helmet
Anyone have an idea what this is? An older gentleman gave it to me to sell for him and I haven't a clue what it is other than an old military helmet. Figured I'd start here. I don't know the nationality, model, make, anything. So anything you could tell me would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Wish I could be specific, and I probably should not answer unless I CAN be specific or sure of my answer, but here goes:
It appears to me to be either:
-- A WWI- through early WWII-era US military steel helmet. I think the US Navy used this style during WWII longer than the other services.
-- A WWI- through WWII-era British or Canadian steel helmet.
Might be an even different country of origin, but the above is my educated guess.0 -
That's a M17- A1 early WW2 helmet with a "Kelly" liner.
Added: For your next question...they sell from $20 to $75. Yours seems to be in good shape IF it is all original, {no repro liner} $45 to $100 {maybe [:D]}

Prior to WWI no Army had an actual helmet as such. Head wounds from bursting artillary shells were a big problem. I believe in the early days of WWI this helmet was introduced. It is known as the "Brodie helmet" Millions were produced. Many allied countries used this helmet up to the end of the 2nd world war. Not intended to stop a bullet but to help diminish head wounds from falling schrapnel. I have one in my collection that I got from a Marine Raider. He picked it up in Guadalcanal. It is almost pristine. The marine that had it, scratched his name and outfit inside the helmet. Some artifacts can talk after all!![:)] 0
