17HMR tackdrivers?
My very next gun will be either a CZ450, Henry Varmint Express, Ruger Varmint, or a Savage 93R17CLS in 17 HMR.
Which is the better TARGET/VARMINT (supported position, little movement) rifle, and why?

Cannot speak to the others, but bought the heavy barreled thumbhole stocked Savage this past year. Closest thing to a death ray I have ever had. With the 17 gr polymer tip ammo, no wind, off the bench, 5 shots in a quarter inch. 0 -
My plain jane Ruger 77/17 shoots 3 shots touching @ 100 yards with Hornady ammo on a somewhat windy day. A better scope or one with a thinner reticle might improve this. Not a fluke as I also have bigger calibers that cut one hole at that range. 0 -
I figure with a varmit gun it has to shoot way past 100 yards and wind not play with the bullet. But that's just me. 0 -
Mine is a 93 and I can put three or five in a dime at 50 or 100. I don't see .17 as a really long range round. Great squirrel or rabbit rifle. 0 -

CZ makes a 455 and a 453, I have a 452 Varmint in 17 HMR (don't know if that model's still made) and found it to be very, very accurate. It has a stable stock well suited for supported position shooting. You can't go wrong regarding acccuracy and the CZ rimfires, I plan on picking up a 455 with a 22 Magnum barrel as my next gun.0 -
I have a CZ 453 Varmint, in 17HMR. it is one of the most accurate rifles in my stable, in factory dress. It even comes with the single set trigger. With most ammo, it will smoke the Ruger's, Savage's, and Marlins out of the box. I am not just saying, I have actually done it. I would leave the Henry alone.

My Savage in 22 mag keeps 5 in an inch at 100 - I've seen hte same gun in 17hmr keep them in 1/2 inch at 100.
Only thing either of us had to do was add a scope and ammo ...0 -
My take on the 17hmr is that the ammo is produced at very high standards as compared to many of the lesser offering of 22lr and such. Because the CCI and other offerings are so good most of us are getting good results as long as the rifle you buy is made of good components. I'd pay close attention to the quality of the barrel and the trigger. I personally shoot a custom converted Ruger 77/22 and am very happy. But the seveal Savage offerings with the accutrigger I have had a chance to try at the range have been great. Also the CZ single set trigger has had a great reputation for a long time now. So I would expect that you would be well served with any CZ, Ruger or Savage rifle you pick. The biggist difference between them as I see it is cosmetic and that is the realm of your personal choice. I am on my 4th different savage now and have had great luck with all of them. Keep switching to get the finish and style and trigger that comes out. Even with my early guns that had a sub par optics mounted they were deadly. Any of the before mentioned brands are quite frankly are just as good, I have just had great luck with the savage and have never changed. In the end I just dont see a lot of negatives with the majority of the rifles that shoot this round. Just dont go super cheap with your choice. Enjoy this round as it is very fun. 0 -
bought my first Savage/Bushnell combo .17hmr a couple of months ago on sale at Cabellas for $199.99. Best $199.99 I have ever spent!!
I have three other .22lrs that are now dust collectors or loaners for friends that want to go shoot with me and don't have their own gun. Bad ass lil guns that will blow up tannerite to boot.0 -
I bought a Marlin 917S. It's shoots great, but you need a log chain and a tractor to pull the trigger.[:0] 0
