model 1884

can anyone help me with the history of this rifle? I have a model 1884. This is stamped on the trap door. Below is the s/n 434375. On the side plate with the eagle and Springfield (behind the hammer) is stamped the # 1883. On the stock in half inch letter and numbers is stamped

  Your rifle sounds interesting, however only some basic basic information can be provided based on what you posted. You have to contribute as much as possible to get good answers here. The key in most cases is very good photographs.
  
  Is it possible for you to post close up, well-lighted and sharply-defined photos and closeups of the markings on the gun? In one of the permanent, "sticky" topics at the top of page one of the ATE forum, you will find information on how to post photos.
  
  Someone should be along and give some very basic info.

  Your serial number indicates a late Model 1884 manufactured in 1889. Only the early Model 1873 Springfields were dated on the locks. However, Francis Bannerman of NY, who purchased hundred of thousands of surplus Trapdoor Springfields from the government, was known to stamp dates on the lockplates when he "sporterized" them or assembled them from surplus parts.
  
  Pictures are absolutely needed as this is one of the most common rifles to have switched parts, cut down, refinished, etc. This thread shows you how to post pics:
