M1 GARAND
I just got a correct grade M1 from CMP. I don't know a whole lot about them, I field stripped it and cleaned it by using the instructions included. Everything looks great. I was wondering though, the instruction say I should have it looked over by an experienced gunsmith before firing. Is this just a c.y.a. statement, aren't these rifles headspaced and test fired? Thanks, John

hey guys, help me out here, i have two local gunshops in town that are both selling springfield m1,s in 308, they both claim to only have one each, and both are unfired. one has a 1499.00 price tag, and the other has 1599.00 on it. since i am looking to buy one, i was wondering about the price. they say all parts are springfield except for the top over barrel, it seems to be a tan color plastic. any ideas on this being a good purchase for a shooter and future collectable? 0 -
There used to be a gizmo (a chamber insert) that could be inserted in the chamber to change the size to.308 but I haven't seen any for sale in years. The only other option is a new barrel 0 -
The bushing that Ned already mentioned allows the use of the shorter 7.62 NATO round in the M1s .30-06 chamber but these are very trouble prone and not really suitable for any kind of extended firing. There is typically a small plastic insert included with the bushing to fit into the M1's bullet guide to prevent a clip of .30-06 ammo from being inserted into the rifle by mistake, but the spacer is not actually necessary for the rifle to feed correctly.
The bushing are frankly not worth the time and trouble.0 -
This conversion is usually done by simply installing a 7.62 mm NATO barrel. The plastic spacer is a good idea, but nothing else is necessary.
However, all M1 rifle barrels are expensive, & the swap must be done by a gunsmith. Unless you bought a rack grade rifle with a bad barrel for very little, & need a new barrel anyway, the economics don't work out well.
I suspect if you track GB auctions, you can find an M1 rifle in 7.62 NATO for less than the price of one in .30-06.
