45 colt 44mag
What would be the big difference between a 45 colt and a 44 mag if being shot from revolver with 4 5/8 barrel. Buying a new Ruger Blackhawk and was set on the 44 mag. but am now thinking about same gun in 45 colt with interchangable cylinder 45 auto. No half moon clips needed.

Bullet weight is similar, roughly 220-250 grains. Muzzle velocity for the 44 mag is much higher by 300 to 500 FPS or more. The 45 Colt is a old 19th Century BP cartridge, most ammo companies loads low velocity lawyer proof cartridges for it, approximately between 700 & 900 FPS. A few small outfits load high velocity ammo 45 LC ammo strictly for the modern guns that can handle it,. 0 -
Are you saying there are not many factory loads that would increase the velocity of the 45 colt to be more comparible to the 44mag. What about price of amo. I would rather have the coversion ruger with 45colt if velocity and energy was not far below 44mag and if price of amo was not very different. Will be wearing it hunting,white tail in ga., but not as primary weapon. I will be using it more for fun than for hunting. Price of gun is the same I would be getting extra cylinder, 45auto, with the 45colt. What do you think? 0 -

Go with the 45 Colt/.45 ACP combo for the BH. Way more fun and cheaper to shoot. If you need HV loads for hunting there are a number of suppliers who sell them for the 45 LC. They are quite spendy though. It would be better if you got into reloading, so that you could make up your own hot loads for the LC.0 -
Leaning that way. Im also considering the Taurus Judge for the wife or the Ruger SP 100 327 for the wife. If I went with the 45colt and bought her the Judge we could use the same factory amo. Any thoughts on the Judge? 0 -
Look at Buffalo Bore for Hot loads for 45 colt for hunting. I have the Ruger with both cylinders and love it 0 -

I had a Judge, was very unhappy with it. Only accurate with light .45 Colt handloads, with over sized .455 dia. bullets. The .410 loads were only accurate at 5 yds. or less. Don't get me wrong it would be OK for close range personal protection.
But IMHO a Ruger SP in .357, not .327 Mag would be a way better choice. She could shoot all kinds of light .38 Special loads for plinking. And Plus P's and .357's for personal protection.0 -
I agree 100% here with what's already been said
1. With normal factory loads .44 magnum is significantly more powerful than .45LC.
.44 magnum is better served for hunting. .45lc/.45ACP is better for self defense.
2. Of the three rounds. 45 auto is the cheapest. .44 magnum is in the middle, and believe it or not, .45LC is the most expensive.
.45LC isn't super scarce, but you may have a hard time finding it a "Walmarts" and similar large chain sporting good stores. The other two (45ACP and .44mag) you should be able to find at any gun store.
3. DO NOT buy a Taurus Judge for your wife. Amongst other deficiencies, the gun is heavy, bulky, and inaccurate, grouping poorly with .45LC rounds and making bad patterns with .410 shot.
Pretty much **ANY** conventional revolver would be a better choice for defense, and I'd also agree with the suggestion of either a Ruger or Smith 357 for a new woman shooter.0 -
The .45-.45 combo lets you shoot .45 ACP, Cowboy, Standard, and Buffalo Bore .45 Colt for a wide range of power in factory loads.
But then I handload and I can make either the .44 or .45 do what I want done.
Why not let your wife pick her own gun?
Do you have a rental range nearby or some friends with good assortments of guns so she can try different stuff?

Some of the +P Hot loads for the 45LC surpass the 44 mag in power by a decent margin. They are safe to shoot in your blackhawk but don't shoot them in a Colt SAA or replica. 0 -
But IMHO a Ruger SP in .357, not .327 Mag would be a way better choice
diaagree with above, the 327mag may be new but you can still shoot 32H&R mags , 32 long , heck even the 32 ACP out of a revolver chamber in 327mag0
