I have my dads model 1911 from WWII and on the grip is a 41 in white paint. Does anyone know what this might be. I'm sure it was put on the grip years ago.

Could be the armory number but it does have the S12 stamped in the medal. Any other ideas

Most firearms have inspectors marks stamped on them during the manufacturing process.

I suspect yours has a receiver made by Springfield Armory.

It's usually best to post photos if you have specific questions.

The white painted number is most likely a RACK number for the arms room. The slides have a makers name but the frames do not . each maker was given a BLOCK of serial numbers so the only way you can tell who made the frame is with the complete serial number . Miore pistols have mismatching parts then NOT because some grunt was given the job of cleaning all pistols at one time.and he did not keep all the parts together. Inspector marks are everywhere on 1911/1911A1 pistols and they can tell you a lot of information. Good close-up in focus"MACRO FOCUS" natural light.
