I was given an old cavalry gun by my uncle and would like to figure out what the history is...can you advise? I have pictures.

That's why we need pics. At least tell us if it is a hand gun or long gun!

THAT SAID- a date of 1888 and the marks you have suggest to me it might be a Martini-Henry, but that's just a wild guess at this point.

It does sound like a Martini. BSA & M would be Birmingham Small Arms & Munitions, IIRC. The VR would stand for Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria) since all arms were the property of the Monarch. Should have a broad arrow mark there somewhere. But a picture IS a "gotta have". See the sticky for posting photos-

South Sandwich Islands? Welcome! I think you are probably the first voice we have heard from your part of the world - a place I didn't get to in my travels. Some more description would help a lot, as they say photos if possible. You might confirm if it is a Martini by describing how it works, under lever that drops the breech block for single loading, etc. Shades of Kipling
