Smith & Wesson 38, 36-1
It was suggested that I post photos of a gun that I would like to sell in order to gain feedback regarding the sufficiency of the photos and any comments that I should make in the listing. I thank you each for the feedback you have provided thus far and look forward to any additional feedback you may provide.
I would also like to know the best method to use to address the scratches on the gun. I don't own a dremel tool or other equipment. It will need to be something that this novice can be do by hand.
Thank you all for your prompt and straight forward responses. I will take the gun to Cabela's and a couple of other stores for an estimate and offer, take new pics (after I reset the date), do a search for completed sales for 'comp's' and minimum sale price and buy now price, and then list the gun for sale. Consignment fees in the Dallas area appear to be in the 15 to 25% range - WOWser. I found some completed sales for guns of similar condition with boxes that are in the $500-600 range. But will see what we will see. Again you guys are terrific. Thank you so so much.

Your photos are great, really will help to sell the Smith on the auction. I don't know how much it's worth, but Nickeled, 3" 36's, aren't common. Looks to be in at least Very Good condition, ( the light scratches appear to be the only negative). Perhaps you can try to very carefully polish them out using Flitz or Simichcrome? It would probably make a S & W collector very happy to have in their collection. 0 -
I know where there is one for sale in about the same condition; also nickel and 3 inch, just an earlier pinned model. Listed price is $369 and I would think yours would be in the same range. 0 -
The condition is very good except for the light scratches.
It should bring $350-400.
If you have the box and papers, those would add $50-100 to it.

I would do nothing but wipe with a clean cotton cloth.
And, you want to resize your photos to 800 x 600 before you post your ad.

Being super-picky, the lighting in the pictures isn't entirely even.
Size of them could be smaller, but better too big than too small.
The dates are a little distracting, and its a bit odd that they aren't all the same date.
But this is just being perfectionist. The fact is the pictures are perfectly fine for an auction listing, and actually probably better than the pictures in many auctions.
List it starting at $1, with those images and I guarantee the gun will sell. I can also guarantee that it won't sell for LESS than $250, because I'm willing to bid that myself right now!
As to the scratches on the gun, you could try to polish them out with some light metal polish (like flitz, etc), but my suggestion is to do NOTHING whatever. It probably won't increase the value of the gun by all that much, so let the buyer worry about that.
I basically agree with the others price estimates of about $400 or maybe a bit less.0 -
This pistol has a nice combination of features - the heavy 3" barrel, the medium width "combat" trigger are two that jump out. The nickle plating is a matter of personal taste and the environment in which it will be used. I would think you should be able to get the $350-400 that has been mentioned, once the right buyer sees it. 0 -
Take the advice to heart about not using anything more than polish on this piece. Nickel plating is very thin, and will flake off if you do anything more aggressive to it. It will then look like it is cancerous, and collector interest and value will vanish. 0 -
Better pics than I see on MOST auctions. Do not allow a Dremel to be in the same room with that gun. As said, Flitz might help, but I would not. Should have appeal to collector's as well as being a good carry gun. FWIW, the nickel was not just "eye candy"- concealable guns spent time in close body contact- the nickel helped prevent rust. If you put it up for sale here, please come back by, post a "shameless plug" to direct us to it. 0 -
I think the price advice you have been given here is valid. I would do nothing to the finish but wipe it with a soft cloth. It is quick and easy to turn a $400 gun into a $200 gun by using abrasive of any kind on the finish. 0 -

Yep, soft cloth and a drop of oil.
