Browning BAR - Problems with Bolt and/or action
Gents,
I just received a Browning BAR .270 that I got on gunbroker (my first BAR) and I am having an issue - the bolt doesn't seem to want to go back all the way--it does this whether the magazine is in our not.
As you can see in the following videos, the operating handle only goes about 1/2 of the way to the back, and because of this, the bolt face only goes about 1/2 of the way back in the chamber, not far enough back to allow a round out of the magazine or to chamber a round. Something solid (metal on metal) on the back end of the bolt is hitting the butt end of the inside of the receiver, preventing the bolt from moving any farther back:

Any thoughts on why this is happening?

Scope base screws too long? 0 -
the easiest thing to try would be 1. remove scope mounts 2. apply lubricant and let sit 3. give the gun a good shaking
if that doesn't work here's what i think, you might try looking through the bottom while you cycle the action also i had the same problem with a gun once and in that case the buffer had fallen apart and was stopping the bolt from coming back all the way the bar does have a buffer and over time they can break.
if you disassemble it you will probably find the problem, if you don't or don't want to, you can take it to a gunsmith.0 -
you also MAY have a broken timing latch (or t.l. pin) this is a small 'fipper' attached to the bacl side of the breech bolt. you have to dis-assemble the rifle and remove the bolt to get at it. 0 -
I tore the rifle down to the bare receiver--someone had assembled the gun with the op rods seated forward of their proper location, limiting the bolts rearward movement. [:(!] 0
