Colt AR15 A2 Sporter

A few years ago I bought this, s/n SP 302XXX has the round hand-guard and no forward assist, I dug into it a few years ago and found some info about this being built during a specific time when a change over was being made. Can anyone shed some info for me on this fine piece, also has the heavy barrel? Thanks...Dave

    To my knowledge, Colt never sold the changeover blue label A2 Sporter (e.g., 6601 HB) without forward assist. The Green label Sporter which preceded it also had forward assist, but no fence around mag release. The blue label A2 also did not have a bayonet lug as found on the green label. I also believe the green label A2's were the last of the unblocked receiver A2's.

    your rifle falls into this category, SP360200 and below are preban, does it have a bayo lug ? if not, i suspect the barrel was changed sometime before you bought it, possibly by the Colt Factory, Colt started shaving off the bayo lug as early as 1992.

    From the mid 80s to early 90s, Colt used a hodgepodge of parts.
    There are many combinations that were never documented.
    They used up a run of parts and would substitute whatever they had.
    I used to go to Interstate Distributors in Little Rock to pick up Colts.
    If I picked up six of the same model #, one or two would usually have some feature a bit different.

    It does have a bayonet lug and no fence around the mag release. The flash suppressor is the type I had on my 16 while in Nam, not the pronged type. I have considered selling as money is getting tight and thought I would like to know a little more about it. The receiver is blocked too.

    cpermd, is exactly right, there was a time when Colt used what ever they had to make "civilian" rifles their main production runs were Military contract. i do not think Colt is making any guns for the civilian market now days.., does anyone have any info on that ??

    Thanks for the info guys. Can anyone give me an idea of the value? It is extra clean, barrel is marked C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7 I am having trouble reading the MP part, there is a C and a H on the receiver, and the old time sights, anyway any info will be appreciated. Thanks...Dave

    The C & H is Colt marks.
    What I'm having trouble with is it having the 1-7 heavy bbl. and no forward assist. Everything else points to it being a transition model except that.
    The value in today's market would be in the $800-1000 range depending on condition.

    I have one also. My Colt s/n is 103xxx, manufactured in 1979, collapsible stock (16" barrel), no forward assist, short round handguard, lightweight barrel, bayonet lug & birdcage A1 flash hider.

    I bought it from a Manager at Colt in 1979 (1 week after it was made) for $294.70. At the factory it shot 1/4" group (I have the target somewhere in my attic). It is a super light AR-15, much lighter than the M-4.

    Last year in Richmond VA it was appraised for $2000.00. Excellent condition, would be better but I put some rounds through it. My kids are fighting each other for it.

    I agree. This is looking more like an A2 lower and barrel with an earlier A1 upper (in other words, a parts gun). This combination (an A2 lower with A1 upper) was never sold by Colt; and merely claiming that for a time Colt "pieced stuff together" does not mean this is a factory rifle, nor will it offset the $$$ hit on price because of it. I think he's looking at a lot closer to $800 than $1000.

    Thanks guys for all the info. This gives me an ideal of a fair price to sell. I was hoping for about 1200, but it looks like that is not in the cards. I may go to the GB auction with it. Again thanks...Dave

    I can guaran damn tee that Colt sold rifles like that from the factory.
    I have bought and sold them brand new in the late 80s and early 90s.
    I have a couple in the safe right now.
    Agree on the value of around $850-950.
