steyr hahn 1911/1912 conversion

is there a way to convert one of these pistol to shoot 9mm luger or any other common round.

  The Germans did. You will occasionally see a Steyr marked "08" indicating a change to 9mm P.
  I don't know for sure how they did it. Probably with a new barrel but possibly with an 4mm insert in the chamber. I doubt anybody is making Steyr barrels and getting a chamber insert to stay put is not as easy as Nonte's old book makes it sound.
  
  If you handload, brass is available. Starline says:
  "The .38 Super Comp is a heavy duty rimless 38 Super. Similar internal capacity to 38 Super. Designed to enhance feeding reliability in high capacity magazines of competition raceguns chambered for .38 Super. May require minor extractor tuning in some firearms. Also works perfectly for a substitute 9 Steyr case."

  At one time CCI made their aluminum case Blazer ammo in 9mm Largo caliber for the many Spanish handguns chambered for that round and sold as surplus here in the U.S.
  
  For all practical purposes there isn't a nickels difference between the 9mm Steyr-Hahn and the 9mm Spanish Largo cartridge.
  
  If you can obtain some of the CCI ammo or any other commercially loaded 9mm Largo ammo. Buy a box and see how it will function through you S-H.
  
  Please be aware that the firing pin of the S-H is only retained in the slide by a protrusion on the bottom of the extractor. There have been tragic accidents in the past that have occurred when a blown primer caused the extractor to break causing the firing pin to hit the person firing the pistol.
