Take a look at the recoil pad. Does it look factory to you. All the ones I have seen have the hard butt plate.

I have never seen a model 81 with a recoil Pad as original equipment ! So I'd have to say it's an ad on , too bad , other wise it's a nice piece . 0 -

I found another picture of an 81B. The checkering style is right, the recoil pad is not. If the factory had put it on, they would have done it right, not a slapdash job like the one for sale. 0 -

Most likely it was/is owned by a country boy. My grandpa owned an 81. He never even once cleaned any gun he ever owned. Occasionally someone in the family would wipe down the outside with rem oil. A few years after he passed, his A-5 clone sweet sixteen(savage) was given to me. Parts inside it were broken and he still hunted with it year after year. Hope this helps answer your question on how a gun looks ok on the outside but not on the inside.
