Is this 1894 25-35 Correct?

Serial number 596559, missing the ring, has a compass in the comb, other than that is this rifle correct for its age?

    The rear sight isn't original and the buttstock has either been slightly shortened or replaced, I suspect replaced.

    A key to the rear sight not being original to the gun is the elevator having to ride upon the front edge of the frame ring. An original sight, if other than the standard carbine ladder sight, would have been spaced correctly so that it operated without interference.

    While carbines came standard with the slightly curved "carbine butt", they could also be special ordered with a crescent butt (rifle style) or shotgun butt. Since there isn't a picture that shows the fit at the tang or the type of buttplate (rear shot); I'm just going by the different colors and figure of the fore stock and butt stock and what looks like (profile) a buttplate that wasn't used during that period.

    Thanks so much for the great info Old-Colts

    I think I may refinish/restore this one. I may try to find some repro/original parts, make it pretty again and use as a shooter. Can't worth too much as is so no harm done.

    You're welcome, but at some point Bert will comment on your 94 and he may have better insight into the buttstock's originality to the gun even though it has had some alterations. Can you provide a picture of the buttplate?

    Also, I don't think I would refinish it; the metal still looks pretty good as is, in my opinion. Also, you can find the correct rear sight for it, probably here on Gunbroker on the auction side.

    I also noticed that the front sight appears to be a replacement; it was probably replaced at the same time the rear sight was replaced.

    The butt stock is not original to the gun, and it should have the Carbine ladder sight on it. The front sight is original.

    I don't have any pics of the butt at the moment, as I recall is just plain flat with checkering.

    The rifle still has lots of blue on mag-tube, decent on barrel but receiver is white. No rust or pitting anywhere but has scratches on receiver and is missing saddle ring. I like to fix up old guns, figured this one not worth too much so it would be good candidate.

    We had a topic about receiver scratches on Winchester lever action receivers awhile back. Seems some came from the factory with them, ( better check with Burt for the skinny, he would know ). I wouldn't be polishing them scratches out, they might be factory original?

    Those "scratches" are actually forging striations, and they are a positive sign that the gun has not ever been polished/buffed and refinished.

    Your Model 1894 was manufactured in February of 1913, and it originally had a blued receiver frame, with a case colored lever, hammer, and trigger. With everything that is not right with it, quite frankly, it would be a waste of time and $$$$ to refinish/restore it.

    Don't marginalize what you have; it is still a Model 1894 Winchester SRC chambered in 25-35, not the most common chambering in that model. Yes, there are things wrong with it, but it hasn't been butchered. The metal is still in fairly nice condition and it should be a fine shooter. Personally, I'd try to find a nice set of wood for it, the correct rear sight, and a real, not reproduction, saddle ring and stud for it.

    I wouldn't, however, refinish it! My 2 cents!
