Excesive Price for S&H?
Question to all members:
I purchased a S&W revolver from a Midwest dealer that I won on-bid for a very fair price, however I was charged fifty dollars ($50.00) for shipping, handling and insurance to Idaho.
Is this out of line or am I not current with the going rates?

i won't pay that for shipping but if your total is still reasonable ????? 0 -
If it was shipped by FedEx or UPS then that is not at all out of line and is in fact pretty much the going rate. 0 -
the only way we can tell you if the price is to high is if we know the shipping method also, the cost of insurance is usually determined by the price of the item.
in my opinion all that matters though is what you spend in total0 -
That is why i cant buy a parts gun to get one part, 150-200. Because it has a serial number,ffl ( some have a extra 50 cause we could have sold it fee) shipping and the basic cost 0 -

As mentioned, $50 is a fairly typical charge for shipping a gun. Its not "crazy" or "out of line".
If you go through a private carrier, cost of shipping and insurance alone is probably about $30, and if you throw in packaging costs and the shipper's time in wrapping the thing up and doing the necessary paperwork, $50 isn't unreasonable.
Personally, I think $50 is a little on the steep side for an FFL shipping through US postal mail (which they are legally allowed to do), but again, its not "crazy" high.
Lesson here is to ascertain the shipping costs BEFORE bidding on a gun, and consider that total in making your bid. To some extent, shipping costs might be negotiable, *IF* you contact the seller before bidding.0 -
I think it is on the high end of the range. I just paid $15 shipping and just under $15 more for insurance to ship a hand gun FFL to FFL. With another $15 to my transfer FFL I was at still under the $50 shipping and handling. 0 -
I am not an FFL, so I have to take handguns to my FFL to ship. He started using USPS about 3 months ago, FedEx just got too expensive, and he had to call them to come pick it up. We all live out in the boonies. Point being, he charches me $20 for transfer and $20 for shipping and insurence, $40 total. Thats as good as I can get for not being an FFL.

I normally pay 30 to have it shipped to my FFL, then the FFL charges me another 30 for transfer. If you got a good deal on the gun .... I would consider it a fair price. 0 -
fedEx and UPS have you at their mercy. They charge what they want and require overnight shipping for handguns which you have to declare. FFL holders can ship to each other via US Mail which is much cheaper. Insurance is also very expensive and well as remote delivery charge. You can go to each of their sites and determine the cost. 0 -
USPS Priority Mail is the cheapest way to ship a handgun and very competitive on long guns if not too heavy or all the way across the country.
I sold and shipped several longguns earlier this year and I lost a little on a couple by setting a conservative fixed shipping fee. One was actually lower than the fixed amount so I refunded the difference. I bid on the total cost so a high shipping will cause me to not bid as much. I'm shy of the "actual shipping" clause as I've been snookered on that before. A couple of sellers seemed to be covering their loss on a low final bid by jacking the shipping up.0
