Mauser 98 1916/1920 stock help
Picked up an all matching 98 Mauser that has been sporterized by cutting the stock down. Barrel does not appear to have been cut down, is about 24" long. The front ring has a crown over ERFURT, then below that is the date 1916. Above it all is 1920. I figure this was a rebuild into a KAR 98 type at some time. No import marks that i can find, and the reciever ring has not been ground. The stock was cut down in front of the rear barrel band, and the wood was left under the band, but removed to the front and back. What stock do i need to look for to put it back to original condition? It's a shame, the stock and butplate even are serial numbered as well. There is a retaining ring on the front of the receiver for the handguard as well, so i figure this would be slightly different than a Kar stock. Anyone know? It's in excellent condition with a great bore as well. What would it be worth?

If the barrel length is original and not cut down? It's most probably a Model 98AZ, know mostly to U.S. collectors as the Engineers Carbine. Besides having a shorter barrel then the standard G 98 infantry rifle, the receiver was smaller in diameter, i.e. questionable if the standard G 98 stock is going to fit correctly?
Photo below is of one I got off the net. Stacking rod and front band are very distinctive.

That looks like the one i have. With the exception of the front band and stacking bar are missing, the forend is cut back to just in front of the rear band, and the handguard is cut to where it is only under the band, with a little before and behind. i'll see if i can post pics when i get home.

EDIT: In looking this thing over as i've gotten time ( i really need more than 24 hours in a day! ) it is all matching. Even the magazine follower is stamped with the last 2 digits, the even the extractor band is stamped!
More importantly, where can i find a stock and a front barrel band?0 -

Coming up with a original 98 AZ stock, front band assembly, stacking hook and bayonet lug etc., isn't going to be a easy task.
A double dated, reichswehr used, AZ 98 would probably be a big buck item to a military rifle collector though.0 -
I recently sold a m-98az here (mis-matched, not cut down) for jus over $300. yours would be worth about the same. even with a new stock it would still be mis-matched.
